Alain Foko Kamga
completed a bachelor's degree in agronomy with
specialization in plant production at
the Institut National du Développement Rural (Université
de
Dschangs-Cameroon) in 1995. His thesis centred on three
plant pests (anthracnose, Loranthus species and Fomes
species) that affect the Para rubber tree at Niete. He
taught microbiology and ecology at the École des
Techniciens Agricoles de Dizanguè-Cameroon and then worked
for the Ministry of Agriculture as chief agronomist in
charge of agroforestry extension services related to soil
and forest conservation, in the Littoral Province. In
2000, he received a Belgian bursary that enabled him to
earn an M.Sc. in soil science (natural resource
management) at Université de Gand in 2002. His research
topic was the use of formaldehyde for carbon sequestration
and slow release of nutrients in soil.
In December 2003, Mr. Kamga immigrated to Canada and began
advanced studies in plant physiology at Université Laval,
in Quebec City, which led to a master's degree in soils
and environment. His research topic was nitrogen
fertilization of potato using nitrogen assessments. For
six potato cultivars, Mr. Kamga identified areas of
sufficient nitrogen in the plants and the soil, by using a
Horiba Cardy nitrate meter and a SPAD chlorophyll meter.
He also used the compositional nutrient diagnosis (CND)
approach to study nutrient balance (Ca, Mg, K, N, etc.) in
the plants.
Mr. Kamga attended a training program at Carrefour
BLE,
which enabled him to update his knowledge of sustainable
agriculture and the agri-food sector in Quebec, PAEF (agri-environmental
fertilization plan), HACCP, etc. He is currently doing an
internship at the Horticulture Research and Development
Centre in St. Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec, in the Plant
Breeding and Physiology of Fruits and Small Fruits
section. He is working mainly on the development of new
cold-hardy apple varieties by analysing characteristics
such as Brix level, acidity and shock resistance.
